Honestly, I would hate to see another blog post with "first post" as a title that dies after couple more posts. Anyways here's bit of my story and how EMO IS FOR LOVERS started:
Finding friends who share your music taste and style can be tough. We all have had common experiences of being negatively judged for the taste of our music or for not being able to move on despite the aging curve or the music not being in the trend, or feeling a subtle self consciousness about liking the music that you listened to more than a decade ago. Because that guy was exactly me. Even old friends making snarky comments about how I am still into "this kind of music". It is especially difficult when this music means so much to me. There were times when I subdued and pretended to listen to something else- Post Malone. I felt extremely shitty afterwards. Not because I dislike Post Malone, but because I had not realized the gravity of acting. Acting to be someone who I wasn't. This was one of the lowest point of my life. I constantly felt extremely lonely even when I had friends to hang out with, and times kept passing by. Years after years. Nothing solved the loneliness. Moreover, I was in a country where "emo" music nor the concept did not "exist". I wondered: "I can't be the only one? The music I still listened to honestly is fking awesome. There must be someone out there feeling the same way as me."
That was when I started a kakaotalk open group chat(similar to Whatsapp group chat). Within a month, a new member named "Freak" joined. She was from Guatemala, and we were both very surprised to find out how we had gone through very similar personal experiences, and how the music means so much for our lives. We soon decided to expand on the idea, and embark on a mission to reach out further to find more people like us who needed a community like we did. That is how EMO IS FOR LOVERS started.
Running a community was and still is no simple matter especially from a guy like me. But it has been the most rewarding project I have done. Not because it brings me any financial value (which is quite the opposite) but rather providing a space that I wish I had for so long makes me very happy. If you are reading this and can relate to what is written above, it is my hope that you realize you are not alone, and that there are people like us around the world.
Whether you're a strong emo purist or into 00s’ My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, and Taking Back Sunday or newer bands like Modern Baseball and The Hotelier, we've got you all covered. If you believe emo is separate from the emo subculture, we don't care. There's so few of us to begin with that we are here to embrace you for you being you (unless you are complete shthead of course.)
Honestly it is only recent days that I was able to really focus on EMO IS FOR LOVERS because life has not been so easy and work has been very busy. However, I was so blessed with wonderful people around to support and to carry on this journey especially with the wonderful members we have in the community. So I would say we are only getting started and sky is the limit. LET'S.FKING.GO.
Love,
DJ
